FSD Africa Pension Funds, Private Equity and Private Debt in Southern Africa

As long-term investors that handle enormous sums of money, pension funds dominate the world’s financial markets, influencing national wealth, community development, industrial prosperity and the functioning of the global economy.

FSD Africa commissioned Intellidex to conduct a detailed analysis of pension funds in eight Southern African countries, to identify obstacles to investment flows into private equity and private debt in those markets.

The eight countries included Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The project involved using a mixed methodology approach, which included conducting an extensive desktop research exercise, carrying out surveys and interviews with investors, private equity fund managers, and policymakers in all eight countries. Our analysis highlights the detailed insights into the policy issues that affect investment in the region.
