Krutham MD Peter Attard Montalto joins Business Day TV to discuss how SA should move forward to secure a trade deal with the US.
“It’s a hugely complex thing to change export countries. This doesn’t happen overnight. If we take the agriculture industry, you might be able to line things up for the middle of next year and through another harvest cycle, but you do not just call a number at the DTIC and magically export your goods elsewhere,” says Attard Montalto. “The DTIC is also talking about several pots of funds to support industry. This is all tiny. The total tariff impact in agriculture and cars is going to be about R8bn. Beyond that, in the rest of the economy, it will be much larger. There is not going to be money from National Treasury to support this. Treasury will insist that the DTIC reallocates funds from elsewhere.”
