“Some remarkable things stand out in this MTBPS. The first is the strength of revenue performance in a very weak real-GDP economy. It is remarkable that we are hitting more than 25% of GDP without raising taxes. Contrary to the commissioner beforehand, that is not entirely SARS. There is profit in the system, a little bit in terms-of-trade shock and bank profits filtering through, and then you add the increased collections that the commissioner mentioned,” says Peter Attard Montalto.
